Clinical Social WorkTop

Clinical social workers meet with the parents or guardians of children who have been abused by a non-family member to provide crisis intervention. They assess the needs of the children and their families to determine appropriate referrals for them, both at The CAC and at other community resources. The clinical social workers are able to coordinate the services for the families and ensure they are linked with the appropriate investigating agency. They make home visits to families who are unable to come to The CAC yet require follow-up services. They may also serve as contact persons for people in the community who have questions about The CAC.

Forensic InterviewingTop

A primary goal of The CAC is to reduce the number of times a child has to tell his or her story of sexual abuse. The forensic interviewing program enables children to make their disclosures on videotape, allowing all professionals involved in the case to view the taped statements, rather than submitting the child to repeated interviews. The forensic interviewer is typically the first professional a child encounters at The CAC after making a disclosure of sexual abuse. A child's initial statement marks the beginning of his or her treatment and is perhaps the most difficult obstacle to overcome. A child must open up to the forensic interviewer in order for his or her case to progress. The forensic interviewers are trained in gathering pertinent information from children in a very non-leading and compassionate manner. Referrals for forensic interviews are accepted from Children's Protective Services, law enforcement agencies, the district attorney's office and judges.

Therapy & Psychological ServicesTop

The CAC offers a variety of services ranging from crisis intervention and psychological evaluations to group, family and individual therapy for child victims, siblings and non-offending caregivers. We use a holistic approach that helps restore the child's sense of self, comfort and safety. We capitalize on the power of expressive therapies including play, movement, art and music therapies, which allow children to express their feelings in creative ways. Therapy teaches children that they are not alone, helps them understand that the abuse is the responsibility of the offender and ultimately provides a healthy, guilt-free way to avoid long-term trauma. Upon referral to The CAC, every child is evaluated so clinicians, caseworkers, family members and caregivers can work together to design a unique, coordinated treatment plan. Regular review meetings are conducted throughout treatment to monitor the progress of each client.

Medical Services Top
The CAC has an onsite medical clinic operated by expert pediatric physicians and nurse practitioners who administer sexual abuse examinations and rape-evidence collection kits utilizing state-of-the-art, non-invasive equipment. This helps minimize the child's discomfort and fear during the exam and provides videotaped evidence that can be utilized during court hearings. In addition, the clinic provides wellness examinations, physicals, immunizations, DNA blood testing, follow-up exams, expert testimony in criminal and civil court cases and after-hours phone consultation.
