Ayesha Mian ,MD

Assistant Professor

Menninger Department of Psychiatry

Baylor College of Medicine

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

9:00 am – 12:00 pm

The Children’s Assessment Center

Course description:

Adolescent suicide continues to be a national epidemic and a puzzling health crisis.  With the challenging face of the United States in its ethnic diversity, it is important to approach the crisis from an ethno-cultural perspective and seek intervention strategies that are rooted in cultural competence.

At the end of the workshop participants will acquire knowledge of a crisis intervention model for teen suicide that utilizes significant family participation in the process.  The participants will bring their clinical experiences on how cross-cultural factors color their approach to suicidal patients and their families.  Active participation will be           encouraged to discuss how to raise clinical cultural competence level when addressing the needs of this vulnerable      population.  Participants will gain information regarding some novel treatment strategies utilized in a culturally sensitive context that can be incorporated in their clinical practice.

This workshop is designed to help you:

¨ Implement a culturally sensitive family oriented model of crisis intervention for teen suicidal behavior.

¨ Cite current literature on the ethnic and cultural influences on the prevalence and presentation pattern of teen suicide.

¨ Utilize culturally rooted and contextually based interventions in a therapist’s approach to a suicidal      teenager and his/her family.
